The Amazon Mechanical Turk is a website centered around what Amazon
calls Human Intelligence Tests, or HITs. These HITs are various
simple tasks which are easily accomplished, but are of a very large
number and cannot be performed by a computer. You may be asked to
transcribe a voice recording, compare household tax records, or
call and list the opening and closing times of all the restaurants
in a certain city. You can pick and choose which HIT you want to
do, and as long as you complete it in the required time limit, you
should get approved. The results of your HIT are checked by the
person who submitted the task, and if you completed it in a satisfactory
manner, Amazon pays you, either by Paypal or Amazon.com Gift Cards.
You can cash out with Paypal at any time.
The downside to the mechanical turk is that the majority of tasks
are extremely mundane and tedious, and many do not pay well. Also,
everyone is looking at the same list of tasks, so the good ones(usually
transcribing jobs), get snatched up quickly. And even if you get
the task and complete it, if you don't complete it to the submitter's
liking, you won't get paid. Amazon itself is reliable, but the submitters
are not neccesarily so.
Check it out, but don't spend too much of your life on it.
Until next time!
